CMC Hult Prize Competition

December 6, 2014

The Hult Prize Foundation selected CMC amongst thousands of institutions to host one of their namesake events this upcoming year. The foundation is a not-for-profit organization that strives to encourage social entrepreneurship around the globe. Each year the Hult Prize Foundation holds a competition to solve one of the world’s greatest issues, and this year’s focus is Early Childhood Education. The competition is open to groups of four to five students (including one optional alumni) from colleges and universities around the world. Students nationally and internationally will apply to compete in regional competitions held in one of six cities (San Francisco, Boston, São Paulo, Dubai, London, or Shanghai). The winners of each regional competition will then undergo a six-week summer accelerator program through The Hult International Business School. During the incubation period, teams will attend entrepreneurship seminars and work with highly qualified business professionals to form their idea into a bankable proposal. After completing the accelerator the six teams will present during the Clinton Global Initiative Annual Meeting in New York. A winning team will be selected from the last six teams and given a $1,000,000 investment.

ImpACT, an organization created with the backing of the Kravis Leadership Institute, drives interest in social entrepreneurship throughout the Claremont community by offering events such as speaker series, company tours, and case competitions. Will Su, Vice President of ASCMC, approached impACT with the task of organizing and hosting The Hult Prize at CMC, and they jumped at the opportunity.

Selected from a docket of over 1000 institutions, CMC was granted the opportunity to hold a Hult Prize qualification round on campus. The implications of such are that as a CMC student can have the opportunity to bypass some 10,000 other applicants for regional competitions. Over 10,000 teams apply for one of the 300 combined positions in the six regional competitions. By winning The Hult Prize at CMC, the team advances directly to the regional competition in San Francisco. This is a unique privilege granted to few institutions.

Throughout the month of November, impACT will hold 10 workshops to assist students in their preparation for the competition. All CMC students are invited to compete in The Hult Prize at CMC regardless of major or interests. The competition will be held December 6th, 2014.
