“Careers in Start Ups” – Learn from the Best: A Panel Discussion

Please join us in Kravis 102 from 5-6:30 pm Friday, April 25th for dinner and discussion with a fabulous panel of alumni about how to get a role with a start-up organization. This event is expected to reach capacity quickly, so if you are interested, RSVP via Claremont Connect soon.

Alums participating in the panel include:

Andrew Lee ’07 – Andrew is the CEO and co-founder of Esper, a Palo Alto start-up with a mission to change humanity for the better, and save time, by making technology serve us, not distract us. Before starting Esper, Andrew was an Entrepreneur-in-Residence for the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA). Here he helped enact President Obama’s overall SBA agenda including the Startup America initiatives, the SBA Research Program and the SBIC program (a $3B per year debt financing initiative). Before joining the SBA, Andrew was CEO and Co-founder of JamLegend, a music game company, which was acquired by Zynga.

Andrew graduated with a degree in Politics, Philosophy and Economics. While at CMC, he was the student manger of the Rose Institute and co-founded of Fantasy Congress, an online political fantasy game with over 80,000 users which was featured in the NY Times, Chicago Tribune, LA Times, CNN and NPR. is a Truman Scholar, Udall Scholar, and Rhodes Scholar Finalist. His interests include political discussions, running and music.

Eric Scott ’11 – Eric is an investment partner at HVF (Hard Valuable Fun), the technology holding company founded by Max Levchin (co-founder of PayPal and Yelp). HVF’s core thesis is that thanks to low-cost sensors of every imaginable type, near ubiquitous wireless broadband, and advances in distributed computer and storage, data is becoming our most plentiful and most under-exploited commodity. As a result, HVP searches relentlessly for investment opportunities that create value by leveraging data. Before joining HVF, Eric worked at Wantful, a gifting platform, where he led a team of 6 engineers and 3 designers to help launch several products including a premier program, corporate program, and many features and updates, including an iPad app that was featured by Apple as an Editor’s Choice. Before that Eric was CEO and co-founder of GiftGraph, Inc., a company focused on gift giving.

Eric graduated with a degree in Economics. While at CMC he served Executive Financial Advisor to ASCMC and interned at Teranetics and The Brattle Group. Eric Also worked as a volunteer ambulance first responder for Maga David Adom in Israel.

Alex Berman ’12 – Alex is a Product Manager focusing on iOS, Android and Chrome for RelatelQ, a Palo Alto start-up focused on improving relationship management with products people love. RelatelQ has attracted many of the top senior technologists in Silicon Valley and the company’s investors include Formation 8, Kleiner Perkins, Accel Partners, and Redpoint Ventures. Before joining RelatelQ, Alex was a product manager at Intuit, leading their Mobile Payments Lab and serving as the PM for one of the firm’s most promising internal startups, which recently won the Scott Cook Innovation Award. Alex brings personal entrepreneurial experience to his work as the founder of two businesses. He founded his first company in high school, a battery distributor for remote control cars, that grew to $100K in annual revenue by the time he graduated. He founded his second business, a platform enabling college students to find work as tutors, while at CMC.

Alex graduated with degrees in Computer Science and Economics. While at CMC He served as the Chief Investment Officer for the Student Investment Fund.  In Alex’s spare time, he is a passionate skier, poker player, and scuba instructor.

Will Brown ’12 – Will is Partner Development Manager at YPlan, a top consumer mobile company backed by General Catalyst, A-Grade (Ashton Kutcher’s venture fund) and American Express. Before joining YPlan, Will worked for Crowdtilt, where he managed all relationships with vendors, artists, and venues, negotiated contracts, and produced high-concept events using word-of-mouth marketing, many of which received national press coverage. Notably, Will holds the World Record for having produced the largest ever crowd-funded event.

Will graduated  with a degree in Middle East Studies. While at CMC, Will served as the Student Activities Chair for ASCMC and was a researcher for the Roberts Environmental Center. He interned for the Israel Palestine Center for Research and Information in Jerusalem.

Drew Oetting ’12 – Drew is a partner at Formation 8, a $450M venture capital fund focused on enterprise software and resource technology investment. He focuses on enterprise software within the largest verticals of our economy. While at Formation 8, Drew has helped lead investments in Oculus (recently bought by Facebook for $2B), Radius Intelligence, Vicarious Systems, StreetContxt, RealScout and BuildZoom. He spends much of his time helping his portfolio companies recruit top talent. In addition to Formation 8, Drew serves as an adviser to WeAreThorn, a NGO founded by Ashton Kutcher which leverages technology to eliminate child trafficking.

Drew graduated with degrees in Economics and Mathematics. While at CMC he was CEO of the Student Investment Fund, a Robert Day Scholar, two-time Bill Gates Investment Asset Management Fellow and a student representative on the Board of Trustees. He also played varsity golf for CMS and sang tenor in The Claremont Shades.
